St Mary’s Catholic School in Manly is now a Heart Safe School, with students ABLE and READY to save lives in case of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

On average, 575 Australians suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest out-of-hospital every week and ONLY 1 out of 10 WILL SURVIVE!

Our Heart Safe School program initiative was created to raise awareness and education about the very important 3-STEPS to help save a life during a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) out-of-hospital and about the vital function that defibrillators (AED) can perform in saving lives in schools across Australia.

Having access to defibrillators and very importantly, having awareness and education to help save a life in case of a heart attack and especially cardiac arrest out-of-hospital is needed across Australia.

Thank you to St-Mary’s Catholic School for allowing our Staying Alive Foundation and Heart Safe Australia team to provide a lifesaving demonstration to year 5 and 6 students.

A big THANK YOU to the Insurance Advisernet Foundation for sponsorship for the defibrillator donation making St-Mary’s Catholic School a Heart Safe School.

Defibrillators are basically a "Doctor in a box" analysing the patient's condition and providing guidance for CPR and importantly shocking the patient to restart the heart if required.

Knowing WHERE the defibrillators are located and HOW to use them is critical to help save a life in case of a sudden cardiac arrest out-of-hospital as defibrillation within three minutes of collapse can increase the chance of survival to over 70%.

It’s important to educate students as they might be the ones to help save a life not only in school but at home and in the community.  Such lifesaving skills should be part of the Curriculum and provided yearly to students if not already.

Everybody can be a lifesaver with defibrillator awareness, access and lifesaving education.
